Overview:

THIS IS A TEMPORARY, GRANT FUNDED POSITION.

 

This is a provisional appointment.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Under direction performs work of considerable difficulty in traffic engineering relative to traffic control systems and traffic management in the Traffic Management Center.

Responsibilities:

  • Plans, schedules, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel.
  • Supervises and participates in traffic operations engineering work including traffic signal timing projects, signalized intersection design and programming traffic responsive control parameters to improve traffic flow and safety on arterial streets.
  • Supervises and participates in the implementation of system updates and operation of a computerized traffic signal system.
  • Ensures all completed installations of traffic control systems have met the required specifications.
  • Supervises the planning, design, and construction of intersections relative to the installation and operation of traffic signals.
  • Supervises and participates in the compilation of statistical data and technical reports required by superiors.
  • Performs related duties as required.

 

Work Schedule/Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Required to work any and all emergencies as directed by the Commissioner or designee.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of traffic engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
  • A bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Working knowledge of the MUTCD, HCM, AASHTO, and Complete Streets guidelines as well as proficiency with Synchro, SimTraffic, and AutoCAD software packages.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate is preferred.
  • Experience in successfully completing traffic engineering projects (such as: sign and pavement marking plans, traffic signal design, crash analysis and safety studies, complete streets design projects, intersection design projects, traffic signal timing and operational analysis, etc).
  • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must have and maintain a current and valid Massachusetts driver's license.

BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED.
