    Position Overview

    Under supervision and in collaboration with branch staff, within the framework of Library policies and practices, develops and delivers services to a diverse population with emphasis on services to teens in multiple locations, requiring application of professional knowledge of outreach, programming and literature.

    Assigned Location

    To be determined as needed by Youth Services Manager on a rotating basis within designated neighborhood. While at assigned location shall report to Branch Librarian, or ranking staff member.

    Responsibilities:

    Scope of Responsibility

    1. Works with management and staff system-wide to develop, deploy and support outreach services for teens.
    2. Participates in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of library programs and services which fulfill the diverse educational, recreational, and personal needs of teens system-wide.
    3. Participates in the development of interactive community relationships and in the implementation of activities to stimulate use of the Library’s resources by schools and agencies which serve teens.
    4. Works with schools and outside organizations to provide instruction in information gathering, research and digital literacy skills, reader’s advisory, and college and career preparedness skills.
    5. Collaborates with community groups, city agencies, non-profits, and others to bring high-quality programming and services out into the community. Offers library services and programs at non-library locations, including but not limited to schools, community centers, fairs and festivals, and health centers.
    6. Works with Neighborhood Services division members and branch staff to identify key service populations or key neighborhoods for teen services. These areas would include, but are not limited to, services in branch libraries, community centers, boys and girls clubs and other non-library locations.
    7. Assists the Assistant Manager of Youth Services in the development and coordination of innovative, educational block programming for teens system-wide.
    8. Participates in the development of the teen collection in select branches in collaboration with professional branch staff.
    9. May step in to handle “day-of” program implementation to ensure successful continuity of service and fulfill program and partnership commitments.
    10. Participates in and initiates special bibliographic projects. Assists in the compilation of annotated online lists and bibliographies involving book and non-book materials of interest to teens.
    11. Participates in the development and implementation of innovative online services that connect library users with collections, lowers hurdles to access and facilitates the sharing of knowledge among teens.
    12. May participate in recommending and/or planning changes in service or new services for teens.
    13. Keeps current in the best practices of the profession by taking advantage of training and development activities, by reading professional literature, and by participating in system-wide committees, and other professional activities.
    14. As assigned, represents library at local and national conferences.
    15. Works in multiple branch locations as assigned.
    16. May work on public service desk at assigned location to ensure successful continuity of service.
    17. Performs other related and comparable duties as assigned.

     

     

    Competencies

    • Proficiency with MSWord, Publisher, Power Point, and Excel. Familiarity with and interest in a broad range of social networking and online collaboration tools.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    Education 

    Bachelor's degree from a recognized college or university and a master's degree in library and information science from an ALA accredited library school.  Two years of professional library experience. Experience working with teens preferred.

     

    Experience 

    Significant programming experience in youth services required. Programming experience in teen services preferred.  Knowledge of broad-based library programming practices, including current trends in youth outreach services. 

     

    Requirements

    • Some evening and weekend hours, weekly schedule varies based on scheduled programs and events. 
    • Ability to travel to BPL locations as well as to off-site locations. Works in multiple branch locations in designated neighborhood on a rotating basis.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
    • Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
    • CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
