    Brief job description (essential functions of the job):

     

    Overview:

     

    The mission of the Assessing Department is to accurately assess property and provide prompt and courteous help to the public. We collect all property tax data and maintain records of property ownership in Boston.

     

    Reporting to the unit manager or designee performs valuation analysis of real estate and personal property.

    Responsibilities:

    Responsibilities:

    • Prepares reports to describe and evaluate property.
    • Reviews field data quality.
    • Reviews and analyzes abatement claims with supervision from more senior assessors.
    • Provides assistance to staff and the public.
    • Trains, supervises and reviews work of staff as assigned.
    • Prepares reports, conducts research, analyzes and manages data, carries out special projects.
    • Performs related duties as required.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    • At least two (2) years experience of full-time, or equivalent part-time in real estate, appraisal or related field.
    • Appropriate educational substitutions may be made for one year of this experience and a bachelor’s degree and/or MAA (Mass. Accredited Assessor) designation is preferred.
    • Professional knowledge of commercial, residential and personal property valuation, including laws, procedures and methodology preferred.
    • Supervisory and managerial ability preferred.
    • Oral communication skills, including presentation and negotiation, preferred.
    • Written communication skill, including ability to analyze and present data, preferred.
    • Appropriate mathematical and statistical analysis skills preferred.
    • Proficiency in computer environments, application software, word processing, spreadsheets and databases strongly preferred.
    • Interpersonal, teamwork, creativity and decision making skills preferred.
    • Ability to work in all Boston neighborhoods
    • Safe driving record. Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver’s license.
    • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
