    Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

     

    The City of Boston Environment Department works to foster sustainability and climate action throughout the City through numerous programs, initiatives, and policies. The Environment Department is implementing strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, encourage energy efficiency, and prepare for climate change. In 2013, the City enacted the Building Energy Reporting and Disclosure Ordinance (BERDO), a requirement for large buildings in Boston to report their annual energy and water use to the City. The City makes the resulting metrics on energy and GHG emissions publicly available. Housed in the Climate and Environmental Planning Division (CEP), the BERDO program is now in its fifth year, with over 2,150 large buildings required to report annually.

     

    The Climate and Environmental Planning Fellow for BERDO programs will work to support activities related to the BERDO ordinance, and other policies and programs of the Environment Department.

     

    Responsibilities:

    • Supports building owners and managers throughout the reporting process, including the new BERDO Energy Action and Assessment requirements.
    • Assists in the development outreach and training materials and programs.
    • Updates website content, works with permit systems and GIS applications as needed.
    • Assesses building performance and compliance.
    • Supports policy and programs related to climate, energy, air and noise pollution, and other activities of the Environment Department.
    • Performs related work as required.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    • Four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in engineering, building operations, energy efficiency, or a related field.
    • A bachelor's degree in a related field is preferred, and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master's degree in a related field may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience.
    • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills.
    • Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple tasks.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills.
    • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work with diverse interests and backgrounds.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
    • Energy, creativity, and entrepreneurship.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
    • Proficiency in Excel (or other spreadsheet tools) and Office .
    • Experience with energy data, Energy Star Portfolio Manager, and ArcGIS or equivalent is highly desirable.

     

    Terms:

     

    Hourly rate:   $24.00

    Hours per week:   35

    Duration:   Through June 30, 2020
