    Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

     

    Position Overview

    Library Assistant whose duties include the following: Performs duties relative to the routine operations of the Library's Research Services Collections including receiving and preparing both circulating and non-circulating material for use by the public and maintaining stacks in good order.

     

    Reports to

    Research Services Library Assistant Supervisor or Research Services Library Assistants, BLA5

    Responsibilities:

    Scope of Responsibility

    1. Participates in shelving, retrieval, and delivery to patrons of materials including collections for in-library or take home use in all formats handled by the department.
    2. Identifies, refers problems, and suggests solutions to their supervisor.
    3. Collects, routes in, shifts, sorts, shelves, and prepares material for circulation, discard or storage; performs routine mending of materials.
    4. Receives and routes requests, accepts requests for books, periodicals, and other materials from closed stack areas serviced by the department, inspects for completeness, and retrieves materials as assigned.
    5. Fills out simple forms and records and assists in clerical duties as required.
    6. Assists in providing simple equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, e.g. turning on and off, cleaning, filling with paper, replacing toner cartridges, etc.
    7. Assists in keeping an orderly appearance of public information in areas of responsibility. Sorts and routes U.S. Mail.
    8. Attends training as directed.
    9. As assigned, checks in, reports claims to supervisor, and performs quality control for materials within the department.
    10. Performs related duties as required.

    Competencies

    • Proficiency with MSWord.
    • Demonstrates initiative when performing job duties.
    • Communicates effectively and presents ideas clearly.
    • Ability to work well with library staff and the public.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    Qualifications

    1. Education - High School Graduate or equivalent.
    2. Requirements - Willingness to work a public service schedule.

     

    Requirements

    1. Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
    2. Residency - Must be a resident of the City of Boston upon the first day of hire.
    3. CORI - Must successfully clear a Criminal Offenders Record Information check with the City of Boston.
