    This is a provisional appointment.


    Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


    Under direction performs work of considerable difficulty in traffic engineering relative to traffic control systems and traffic management in the Traffic Signal Unit.



    • Plans, schedules, supervises and reviews work of subordinate personnel.
    • Prepares electrical and mechanical specifications for traffic control equipment.
    • Supervises the field construction of traffic signals.
    • Supervises the implementation and operation of computer controlled traffic systems and programs computers to accept new timing plans in response to changes in traffic flow.
    • Ensures all completed installations of traffic control systems have met the required specifications.
    • Tests and evaluates new equipment and techniques.
    • Supervises the planning, design, and construction of intersections relative to the installation and operation of traffic signals.
    • Supervises and participates in the compilation of statistical data and technical reports required by superiors.
    • Performs related duties as required.


    Work Schedule/Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


    Required to work any and all emergencies as directed by the Commissioner or designee.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    • Four (4) years of traffic engineering experience, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
    • A bachelor's degree in civil or electrical engineering is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
    • Working knowledge of the MUTCD, HCM, AASHTO, and Complete Streets guidelines as well as proficiency with Synchro, SimTraffic, and AutoCAD software packages.
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate is preferred.
    • Experience in successfully completing traffic engineering projects (such as: sign and pavement marking plans, traffic signal design, crash analysis and safety studies, complete streets design projects, intersection design projects, traffic signal timing and operational analysis, etc).
    • Ability to exercise good judgement and focus on detail as required by the job.
    • Must have and maintain a current and valid Massachusetts driver's license.
