  • Overview:

    This is a temporary, summer position.

     

    Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

     

    Under the direction of the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) Program Director and Manager, the Referees are responsible for ensuring the safety, rules and regulations of the league are followed at all times and ensure the games start and end on time. 

    Responsibilities:

    • Officiates at sporting events, games, or competitions, to maintain standards of play and to ensure that game rules are observed.
    • Signals participants or other officials to make them aware of infractions or to otherwise regulate play or competition.
    • Inspects sporting equipment and/or examines participants in order to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
    • Keeps track of event times, including elapsed time during game segments, starting or stopping play when necessary.
    • Resolves claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assesses any necessary penalties, according to regulations.
    • Directs participants to assigned areas such as starting blocks or penalty areas.
    • Reports to BNBL Program Director regarding sporting activities, complaints made, and actions taken or needed such as fines or other disciplinary actions.
    • Confers with other sporting officials, coaches, players, and facility managers in order to provide information, coordinate activities, and discuss problems.
    • Verifies credentials of participants in sporting events.
    • Compiles scores and other athletic records.
    • Performs related work as required.

    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

    • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic work environment.
    • Ability to establish relationships with a variety of diverse community groups.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
    • Must have and maintain a current Massachusetts driver’s license.
    • Certification Required: Eastern Massachusetts District Board #27 - I.A.A.B.O
    • Must be able to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) and Sexual Offender Record Information (SORI) background check. 

    City of Boston Residency Required Upon Hire.

     

    Terms:

     

    This is a non-union/seasonal position.

    Salary: $25.00 - $52.50 per game

    Hours Per Week: Varies
