Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job);


The mission of the City of Boston Property Management Department (PMD) is to manage, maintain, repair, and provide security for the City's municipal buildings including City Hall and Faneuil Hall; to preserve the useful life of City facilities and reduce operating costs through effective preventative maintenance measures.


Directly responsible to the Sergeant, the Security Officer has primary responsibility for enforcing security and safety procedures at various locations serviced by the Municipal Protective Services


  • Perform security duty at an assigned post and/or perform security patrols by vehicle or on foot of buildings and grounds with particular emphasis on security and safety violations. 
  • Respond to alarms or other calls for assistance and report all safety and security violations to the Sergeant.
  • Assist with safety of vehicle and pedestrian traffic and issue authorized traffic enforcement citations. 
  • Prepare incident reports, monitor security cameras and access controls and require visitors to register in/out in log books. 
  • Assist other Public Safety agencies in safety and security violations. 
  • Apprehend and arrest individuals who break the law in their area of assignment. 
  • Secure and maintain all equipment issued by department and maintain necessary supplies of report forms, log books, and access control sheets for their shift. 
  • Perform other related security tasks as designated by the Sergeant. 
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license. 
  • Special Police Officer license.  If not a licensed Special Police Officer upon hire, must obtain a valid Massachusetts Special Police Officer license within six (6) months of hire. 
  • High School graduate or equivalent. 
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
