    Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


    The Department of Innovation and Technology is looking for a Solutions Architect to join the Enterprise Applications team. This is an opportunity for an experienced individual to design, deploy, maintain, and improve the portfolio of applications in a hybrid environment (cloud, on premises) to deliver services to the City’s workforce and constituents.


    We are looking for a resourceful person to provide overall direction, guidance and definition for design and technical implementation of enterprise solutions, which encompasses application, middleware integration / APIs, storage, development, and reporting technologies across hosted and on premises environments. Those solutions must deliver value while creating an experience that is welcoming, and highly useful to users.


    The individual will need to demonstrate analytical, technical and ability to learn new technologies to effectively support our existing platforms that enable the City to effectively operate.


    The Solutions Architect will interface across several business areas, acting as visionary to proactively assist in defining the direction for future projects. Ideal candidate is expected to perform hands on development as needed.




    The Solution Architect is responsible for the following key activities:

    • Design of complex solutions consisting of COTS solutions, custom applications, data persistence, all integrated using middleware or API technologies.
    • Lead and engage in the delivery and administration of Enterprise Application Integration technologies.
    • Create technology and architecture roadmap for guiding IT implementation.
    • Ensure architectural design best practices are adopted into solutions implemented (i.e. scalability, security, configurability, maintainability, etc.).
    • Analyze architecture to identify weaknesses and develop opportunities for improvements such as scalability, security, resiliency, and cost.
    • Provide input on options, risks, cost vs. benefits, and impacts of architecture for buy vs. build decisions.
    • Recommend selection and adoption of new tools, methodologies, data and technology platforms.
    • Work with IT leadership in researching industry trends and directions of technologies.
    • Collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to design technology solutions aligned with business requirements to deliver value.
    • Collaborate with project management team to ensure alignment and communication of project status or issues.
    • Engage in all aspects of the project life cycle (kickoff, requirement analysis, design, and implementation delivery).
    • Engage with multiple project teams to deliver value with technology, by designing and modeling solutions, performing quality reviews, and establishing guidelines and standards.
    • Communicate issues of technical nature effectively to vendors and partners to facilitate prompt resolution.
    • Identify risks related to the implementation of solutions and provide mitigation recommendations.
    • Engage in root cause assessment of production environment issues with support from other technical teams.
    • Perform related work as required.


    Minimum Entrance Qualifications:


    • At least four (4) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in technology architecture including design and management of enterprise solutions, software development, and integration technologies
    • A bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field is highly desirable and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience. A master's degree may be substituted for three (3) years of the required experience
    • Demonstrated knowledge of configuring, installing, troubleshooting and supporting enterprise software solutions.
    • Demonstrated experience in administration and configuration of enterprise integration technologies.
    • Demonstrated experience in architecting, designing, and supporting solutions across multi-platform and hybrid architectures (i.e. Virtualization and Cloud platforms Infrastructure as a Service, Platform as a Service and Software as a Service).
    • Demonstrated knowledge of security standards.
    • Technical knowledge of data persistence technologies, including SQL databases is required.
    • Technical knowledge of web based architectures and technologies is required.
    • Technical knowledge of middleware and integration technologies is required (web services SOAP / REST, APIs management).
    • Understanding of solution infrastructure components (firewalls, load balancers, hypervisor, storage, monitoring, security etc.) is desirable.
    • Technical knowledge of development lifecycle and languages is desirable.
    • Demonstrated use of DevOps approaches (including a basic understanding of various programming languages, APIs, SQL / no SQL storage) is desirable.
    • Previous experience in developing APIs is desirable.
    • Demonstrated use of regression and performance testing tools is desirable.
    • Supervisory experience desirable.
    • Previous experience with regulated environment is desirable to support security and audit compliance requirements.
    • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
    • Proactive approach and strong communication skills.
    • Comfortable with ambiguity and effective with minimal guidance.
    • Excellent partnering and collaboration skills.


    BOSTON RESIDENCY REQUIRED - You must live within Boston city limits at the start of your employment. Residency will be verified.
