Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


The City Council is the legislative body of the City of Boston; it creates, passes, and amends local laws, and approves the City's budget every year to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of city services for all Boston residents, businesses, and agencies. The City Council is elected every two years to be the voice of the citizens and to establish public policy to meet the continuous and changing needs of Boston. Under the supervision of the Central Staff Director, the Legislative Assistant serves as a liaison to City Council Committees and provides staff support to assigned hearings.  This role also includes conducting research, drafting reports, and working in a team environment. 




  • Providing staff support for committees, including scheduling & staffing assigned hearings, filing & posting notices, preparing minutes and committee reports, and maintaining hearing files;
  • Preparing Council Chamber & Meeting rooms for Council sessions and hearings, including helping with set-up of offsite/neighborhood hearing locations when assigned;
  • Completing hearing minutes as dictated by law, including obtaining all necessary signatures, as well as other committee reports on a timely basis;
  • Tracking information relative to issues before the City Council, including legislation from other governmental bodies and agencies, interdepartmental information, media reports, and statistics;
  • Researching issues of interest to Councilors and drafting resolutions and reports resulting from research undertaken for Councilors or Council committees;
  • Working in a Legislative team environment to ensure adequate coverage and support services to all Committees;
  • Helping with administrative tasks to support the administration & operations of the City Council, when necessary;
  • Performing other duties as assigned by the Council or Central Staff Director

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, legislative or related experience. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Open Meeting Law, local government, and city departments.
  • Familiarity with Boston neighborhoods and issues impacting residents.
  • Strong writing skills and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently, in a collaborative team environment, and with a diverse array of constituents and staff.
  • Able to manage schedules, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and G Suite (Google Apps).
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work some evenings as required.

Boston Residency Required Upon Hired



Annual Salary Range: $46,640-$60,000

Hours per week: 35
