Overview:

THIS IS A SEASONAL APPOINTMENT BEGINNING FEBRUARY 2018.

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the position):

Reporting directly to Park Ranger II, Park Ranger III, and Chief Park Ranger/Executive Secretary (P&R), act as a special officer as enumerated in Boston Police Rule 400A, by patrolling parks, playgrounds, historic sites and conservation areas in order to promote compliance with Parks Department rules and regulations; by protecting natural and cultural resources; by enhancing visitor experiences through visibility, interpretive programming and visitor information; and by performing related work as required.

Responsibilities:

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provides public safety services to park users and protects the City's park property from criminal activity.

Provides prevention, detection, suppression and prosecution of criminal activity; protection of life and property; and maintenance of public peace.

Coordinates all public safety related matters involving specially permitted events within the parks, including traffic and crowd control, public safety and protection of park resources.

Provides park visitors with general assistance, directions, information on Parks Department activities and city services.

Provides park visitors with information, tours, workshops, presentations, and programs on the historical, cultural, and environmental features of the Boston parks.

Encourages safe park use and enjoyment of the Boston parks by patrolling an assigned area by car, boat, all terrain vehicle, bicycle, foot or horseback; promotes compliance with, and enforces park rules and regulations, ordinances, and relevant laws; and requests emergency assistance when necessary.

Maintains and prepares logs and reports on park incidents, public contact, park conditions, and constituent requests; and assists maintenance staff as needed.

Provides emergency assistance such as CPR, first aid, fighting small fires, searching for lost children, and directing emergency services through the parks when needed.

Must be willing and able to be trained to handle various wildlife and domesticated animals.

Secures and maintains all departmental issued equipment.

Assists Boston Police, Fire, Emergency Medical Services, and other emergency service agencies with security and safety issues related to Boston parks.

Appears in court to represent the Parks Department in all relevant incidents.

Based on assignment, may conduct mounted patrols and care for and maintain horses (eligibility & training required).

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have (A) at least two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in park or resource management or natural cultural history interpretation or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution below.  Substitution: An Associate's Degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, or park interpretation may be substituted for one year of the required (B) experience. Criminal Justice course work a plus.
  • Applicants must have: knowledge of Boston Police Department Rule 400A qualifications; thorough knowledge of the standard procedures and techniques followed in foot, auto, or other types of patrols; knowledge of principles and practices of park or resource management; knowledge of general ecology and cultural history; ability to understand, explain and apply the rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities; ability to orally communicate in an effective manner; ability to speak effectively before the public; ability to accurately record information; ability to make decisions and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; ability to interact productively with people.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts driver's license.
  • Must be available to work any assigned shift/any assigned area.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must successfully complete Boston Park Ranger Academy training program.
  • Pre-employment physical and drug testing will be required of successful applicant.
  • Must submit to a complete background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete Special Officer (400A) training and pass 400A exam within six (6) months of hire. Special Officer (400-A) license must be maintained throughout employment.
