Overview:

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Incumbents are responsible for providing advocacy services to older adults, which may include providing information and referral, processing applications, conducting home visits, preparing reports, selling taxi coupons, monitoring follow-ups, and performing related duties.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides advocacy services to older adults in a comprehensive and timely manner including: information and referral to services and programs; thorough assessments and benefits screenings; home visits and wellness checks, distribution of taxi coupons vouchers; and/or related duties.
  • Gathers relevant information and processes applications
  • Effectively communicates information about Elderly Commission programs and services through community outreach, engagement, and presentations.
  • Prepares, maintains, updates, and compiles a variety of operational and statistical data, records, reports, and files. Meets deadlines and reporting expectations.
  • Provides office coverage to include: answering phones, assisting walk-ins, etc.
  • Responds to emergency crises as needed.
  • Provides timely follow-up to effectuate service into resolution.

  • Conducts all interaction in a positive and professional manner.

  • Processes application for services, ensuring client accurately answers appropriate areas. Evaluates eligibility according to established criteria and refers to appropriate agencies.

  • Handles client and applicant questions regarding programs and services offered to older adults.

  • Complies with the City of Boston Policies/Procedures protecting client information and the confidentiality of the information in accordance with the Federal and State regulations.

  • Assists with Commission events as needed.

  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in the support of human service programs, including social work, customer service, and/or office.
  • Associate’s degree may count for up to one (1) year of required experience, and a bachelor’s degree may count for up to two (2) years of required experience.
  • Ability to give team feedback; ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships with government agencies, social service agencies, community organizations, and older adults highly preferred.
  • Strong presentation and advocacy skills.
  • Strong problem solving ability.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and comprehensive reports.
  • Ability to demonstrate proper use of databases, and other tools to ensure citizens are provided with all available services.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Travel within Boston may be required in support of the position’s responsibilities.
  • Compliance to documented policies and procedures.
  • Experience in typical office software systems (Microsoft Office or equivalent) preferred.
  • Association of Information & Referral Services (AIRS) certification preferred.
  • Serving the Health Information Needs of Everyone (SHINE) certification highly preferred. Must be able to obtain and/or maintain certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Bilingual preferred.
  • Subject to CORI check.
  • MA driver’s license required.

Boston Residency Required.
