Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):


Under the direction of the Director of External Affairs and Marketing, provides assistance to the Parks and Recreation Department External Affairs Division in all areas of Graphic Arts.



Duties include but are not limited to:


  • Takes photos at special events and stocks photos to use in promotional materials and on the web. Prepares camera-ready artwork. Organizes, edits and updates photo database.
  • Under the guidance of the Director, designs promotional and informational materials including print and digital advertisements, event signage, postcards, posters, invitations, digital graphics for social media pages, brochures, flyers, etc., for the Director’s approval. Adheres to City of Boston style guide. Works with DoIT to ensure visual continuity.
  • Coordinates media promotions relative to Parks and Recreation initiatives with the Mayor’s Office, other departments, agencies and community groups as directed.
  • Posts promotions and advertisements of Parks and Recreation events on social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. Modifies information to fit trends on social media to ensure reaching the appropriate audiences. Monitors inquiries made by the general public and relays information; speaks with the appropriate personnel when necessary to ensure accuracy of information.
  • Routes materials to printing vendors; discusses such issues as dimensions of materials, re-sizing, etc. Informs Director of printing cost to ensure it is within budget prior to approval.
  • Maintains files and catalogs of promotional and informational materials.
  • Maintains inventory of art materials and composition materials.
  • Prepares visual aids for Power Point and other presentations as requested.
  • Assists at Boston Parks and Recreation events as needed; takes photos at events, provides coverage of tables and provides information and materials to the general public.
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:


  • At least two (2) years of fulltime, or equivalent part-time, paid experience in the field of graphic arts in work that included graphic arts and design, photography, designing images or graphics for social media use or related field.
  • A bachelor’s degree in the graphic arts or related field may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Proven competency in the use of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Flickr, Snapchat, Reddit, etc.
  • Working knowledge of programs such as Hootsuite, Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, Drupal and DSLR Camera strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, to maintain files; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees; to work cooperatively with employees from other departments and a diverse public.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include some evenings and weekend hours.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the job.
  • Familiarity with Boston neighborhoods preferred.
