THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION FOR APPROXIMATELY 9 MONTHS DURATION.

 

EMPLOYMENT IN THIS POSITION WILL BE VIA AN EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT.

 

Brief Job Description (essential functions of the job):

 

Boston Bikes seeks a Cycling Instructor to support preparations for all Community Cycling Programs and assist with youth and adult bicycle education. 

 

The instructor assists with transporting bikes by truck, and teaches others about bike maintenance. This position also provides in-classroom and on-the-bike youth and adult cycling educational programming at Boston Public Schools and other community locations.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Transport and move bicycles to/from sites using rental vehicle provided by City, sometimes hundreds in a day.
  • Instructs staff and students in mechanics and/or riding.
    • Train cycling instructors in maintenance and care of fleet bicycles.
    • Instruct students in safety and rules of the road within an educational team. Classes range from elementary to high school to community centers and adult groups throughout the City of Boston.
    • Lead group rides and on-bicycle skill-building activities, keeping the class organized and safe, including designing routes.
  • Logistical coordination with Boston Bikes Program Manager and/or school liaisons, including frequently and promptly reading and responding to detailed emails, spreadsheets, and requests.
  • Engage and educate the public about Boston Bikes events, programs, and other biking issues/information.
  • Assist with other Boston Bikes projects including ,but not limited to, field work, removal of abandoned bikes, helmet distribution, repair of fixit stands, etc.
  • Perform related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
  • Willingness and ability to do intense physical activity – riding a bicycle for many hours in a day, moving and loading bicycles.
  • Reliable, punctual, strong work ethic, and can-do attitude.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Experience with teaching youth of varied ages highly desired.
  • Moderate to high degree of familiarity with bicycle safety rules.
  • Ability to improvise and be flexible to make changing circumstances work.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Able to present self in a professional manner.
  • Proficiency in another language helpful.
  • Experience working with diverse populations preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.

 

Boston Residency Required.

 

Pay & Terms:

 

$14-$16 per hour, commensurate with experience. Pro-rated benefits included. This is a grant funded position.

 

Hours vary depending on the time of year. Winter is less busy than spring and fall. General hour expectations are 28-35 hours/week, with an expected average of 30-32 hours/week, mostly during daytime, weekday hours with some evening and weekend events.
